John Street – The local area

John St is in the historic area of Bloomsbury in Central London. The British Museum is a 10 min walk and the Charles Dickens Museum housed in the building where he wrote Oliver Twist, is 1 minute away. London’s West End with its fabulous shopping (Oxford St, Regent St), theatres, art galleries and landmarks (Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus, Big Ben) is close by. Covent Garden with its street theatre, opera house and shopping Piazza is an easy walk. St Paul’s Cathedral and the City (financial district) with its Wren churches and modern landmark buildings (the Gherkin, Lloyds Building, Tower 42) is also close by.It is a short bus ride to the River Thames for boat trips to Greenwich. Perhaps a walk across the Millennium Bridge to the Tate Modern art gallery or just a stroll along the river’s South Bank to the London Eye or to see the rebuilt Elizabethan theatre, Shakespeare’s Globe with its thatched roof and timber frame.

For adults, London is full of parks and gardens, but Russell Square with its fountain, newly restored gardens and cafe is a good place for a rest from London’s fast-paced lifestyle.

There is no outside space with this property, but for children, the excellent Coram’s Fields is moments away. This park only admits adults if they are accompanied by a child. It has swings, slides and climbing frames for all ages, a sand-pit, farm animals and astro-turf football pitches, all free for kids.

The National Gallery There is so much to see and experience in the metropolis; art galleries, theatres, clubs, rock and pop concerts, classical music performances, jazz clubs, comedy clubs, cinema, sporting events – there is an ever changing variety of things to do.The apartment has an A-Z map book, guide books and restaurant guides and Time Out magazine, London’s weekly ‘what’s on’ guide, is delivered each week to help you get the most out of your stay in central London. There is also a small collection of novels set in London and some dvds for a quiet night in.

If you are coming to London on business, John St is convenient for the City of London (financial district), Clerkenwell, Holborn, Covent Garden and the West End of London. For academics it is walking distance to University College London, the University of London library, London School of Economics and the British Library. The apartment is also a short walk from Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery and the Eastman Dental Hospital.

Practicalities

The nearest supermarket is Waitrose in the Brunswick Shopping Centre www.brunswick.co.uk which is almost opposite Russell Square tube station. The Brunswick also has a variety of restaurants and cafes, a handful of clothes shops, an opticians, chemists,  secondhand bookshop (Skoobs), arthouse cinema (The Renoir) and a cash machine. There is a farmer’s market on Saturdays.

There is a Sainsbury’s supermarket in Holborn, opposite Holborn tube station.

You will find a black folder of useful information in the living room of the apartment. It includes details of nearest post office, chemist, swimming pool, doctor etc as well as recommended restaurants, pubs and bars.
